The forex market is open 24 hours a day, five days a week — but it isn’t equally active all day. Volume, spreads and the size of price moves change dramatically by hour. Trading at the right time is one of the simplest edges available.
The four sessions (New York time)
| Session | Approximate hours (ET) | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney | 5:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m. | Quiet; AUD and NZD active |
| Tokyo | 7:00 p.m. – 4:00 a.m. | Moderate; JPY, AUD pairs |
| London | 3:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. | Highest volume; EUR, GBP, CHF |
| New York | 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. | High volume; USD, CAD |
Session times shift by an hour for a few weeks each spring and autumn, because the US, UK and Australia change their clocks on different dates.
The overlaps
London–New York (8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. ET) is the busiest window of the day. Both of the largest trading centres are open, major US economic data is released at 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., and EUR/USD, GBP/USD and USD/JPY typically see their tightest spreads and largest moves here.
Tokyo–London (around 3:00 – 4:00 a.m. ET) is brief but useful for EUR/JPY and GBP/JPY.
Best hours by pair
- EUR/USD, GBP/USD: London open through the overlap.
- USD/JPY: Tokyo session and the New York morning.
- AUD/USD, NZD/USD: Sydney/Tokyo, plus the New York morning when US data drives USD.
- USD/CAD: New York morning, especially around Canadian data and oil-market moves.
- XAU/USD (gold): London open and the overlap. See the gold trading strategy.
Hours to avoid
- Around 5:00 p.m. ET (rollover): spreads can widen sharply for a few minutes.
- Late New York (after about 1:00 p.m. ET): volume fades and moves get choppy.
- Friday afternoons and holidays: thin liquidity and erratic moves.
- Minutes around high-impact news, unless your strategy is built for it.
Daylight saving time shifts
The US and Europe change their clocks on different dates. For about three weeks in March and one week around the start of November, the gap between London and New York is four hours instead of five. During those weeks the London open falls at 4:00 a.m. New York time, an hour later than usual. Australia changes its clocks in the opposite season, which shifts the Sydney open. Check your platform’s session markers on those weeks rather than relying on memory.
Weekly and monthly patterns
- Monday: the Asian session often starts slowly; gaps from weekend news can appear at the Sunday open.
- Tuesday to Thursday: typically the most consistent volume and follow-through.
- Friday: the US non-farm payrolls report is usually released on the first Friday of the month at 8:30 a.m. New York time. Liquidity fades in the afternoon as traders close positions for the weekend.
- Holidays: US and UK bank holidays thin out the overlap even if other centers are open.
Match the session to your strategy
- Breakout traders: the London open — see the London breakout strategy.
- Scalpers: the overlap, when spreads are tightest — see the scalping strategy.
- Range traders: the Asian session, when many pairs drift in narrow ranges.
- ICT traders: the London and New York “killzones” — see the ICT strategy.
Find your own best hours
General session guides are a starting point. Your own data is better. Tag every trade by hour or session in your trading journal, then compare win rate and average R. Many traders find one session where they make most of their money and one where they give it back.
Whatever hour you trade, size each position with the position size calculator — volatility varies by session, so the same stop in pips can mean very different risk.
